Community

No person is an island. Our lives consist of systems of interdependencies that will become more visible in a world of energy decline.  Strength will come from community.

Get in touch with local government - use local government to ‘future-proof’ your local area: it is still a good way to organise.

Contact MPs and local councillors - persuade those who have more power than you to raise awareness and make wider changes.

Get to know your neighbours - they are your immediate community.

Get to know about existing local groups - there will be other local groups who can provide a means of networking and leisure.

Get schools, businesses and local groups involved.

Big corporations often destroy local small businesses - you can save these essential community shops and services by using them – even if they are more expensive.  Think of the petrol you will save!

Join a Transition Town forum - join with others on their own energy descent, help to create a community Energy Descent Plan.

Organise local energy schemes - a community can work together to develop its own local energy options, such as hydro, solar or wind power.  It may not give you all the power you need but it will give you options.

There are many more ways in which we can reduce energy consumption.  We are sure you have loads of innovative ideas – do share them with us!  here
