Transport

......Oil dependent for both public and private vehicles.....

Our dependence on transport to get products to us, or us to work and school cannot be underestimated.  The diminishing supply of cheap oil will force us to look at the alternatives.

Work and School Transport

Live closer to work - this can reduce car usage and give you more travel options such as public transport, cycling or walking.  Reduced commuting time can give you more free time to do the things you enjoy.

Work from home if you can.

Use video-conferencing instead of travelling to meetings.

Join (or set up) a car sharing scheme in your workplace.

Social Transport

Reduce car use - beyond work and school, find ways to reduce your general car usage. For every journey, think “Do I need to drive or am I just forgetting there are other options?”

You may need transport, but do you need a car?  Mopeds are much more fuel efficient, for example. A bicycle is even better.  Public transport has improved in recent years with more frequent services.  For group transport, try using a mini bus instead of several cars.

Use a “Car Share” scheme - sharing a car on any journey helps to keep more cars off the road, is less costly, more environmentally friendly and a great way to make new pals!  Try going to www.isanyonegoingto.com to find car share partners.

Buy a bicycle - cycling is great fun and great exercise, and automatically gives you more oil-free transport options.  If you hate the hills, think about getting an electric bike - click here for info.

Turn your air-con off, keep windows closed - open windows increase the drag factor on your car.  Switch off your engine if waiting in traffic or at the lights.  Keep the heater switched off until the engine warms up.  Change to a smaller engine size car.

Shopping less frequently, using home delivery services and Internet shopping can all help reduce your carbon footprint.
